Why the time of birth matters
The Moon moves about 13° a day and changes rashi every 2¼ days. If you were born on a day when the Moon changed sign, the exact time decides your rashi.

Is rashi the same as zodiac sign?
No. Western zodiac (sun sign) is based on the Sun and the tropical zodiac. Vedic rashi is based on the Moon in the sidereal zodiac.
Can I find my rashi without time of birth?
Usually yes, using 12:00 noon, because the Moon stays in one rashi for about 2¼ days. On sign-change days the time is needed.
What is a rashi lord?
Each rashi is ruled by a planet, for example Mesh by Mars and Kark by the Moon.
