Average price = (Q₁ × P₁ + Q₂ × P₂ + …) ÷ (Q₁ + Q₂ + …)
Worked example
Bought 100 shares at ₹250 and later 50 shares at ₹220. Average = (25,000 + 11,000) ÷ 150 = ₹240 per share.
Brokerage, STT and other charges are not included. Add them to your buy price for an exact cost.

How do I calculate the average price of a stock?
Multiply each purchase's quantity by its price, add them up, and divide by the total quantity.
What is averaging down?
Buying more shares at a lower price to reduce your average cost. It helps only if the stock recovers.
Does selling shares change my average price?
No. Selling reduces the quantity but the average buy price of the remaining shares stays the same (FIFO is used for tax).
Are charges included?
No. Add brokerage and taxes to the price if you want an exact cost.
Can I use this for mutual fund units or crypto?
Yes. The same weighted-average method works for any asset bought in parts.
